What is NANU?
I came to visit my daughter in February 2020, first the storm hit Britain, flights were cancelled then pandemic happened. I was stuck in the UK. My daughter is an actress and she lives in Cardiff, Wales. We started doing things together. Her friends started paying attention to the things we made. And we realised there is an actual need for crafts and especially for up-cycling to consume less in difficult circumstances. We also realised how art and crafts help mental well being.
“Mom, why don’t we turn this into a business?”
This was an exciting idea. We sat down and thought about a name. Since she was born I called her “Nanu”. Nanu means my sweet child in Adige language. Our ancestors come from the Caucasus. But I was born and raised in Turkey. This was a perfect name for this business, it had its own story and emotional connection that bonds us. The craft needs love and Nanu in that sense means love and compassion. We have decided to turn her house into a studio and started investing. We purchased products to start growing our business and now we are ready to sail to a new journey.

My daughter’s home will be our studio and together with my daughter we will work on embroidery, embroidery on canvas, beaded jewellery, baby clothing. I also would like to support sustainability by offering my clients customising their used homeware products like bed sheets, pillow covers, clothes. I also would like to give workshops to teach the craft, and run online lessons for beginners. I would especially like to support and offer my workshop services for young mothers with babies who are mostly stuck at home because of childcare as they can either join online or come with their babies to our home which is baby friendly. I am hoping to support them to gain a stress relief hobby with this craft that they can practise anywhere and also create a potential to earn money with this “know how” to make a living. As known, doing arts and crafts is extremely beneficial for mental health which is why I would like to make my services available for mothers with young children as well as children and teenagers from non privileged backgrounds. I also want to collaborate with local artists and organisations.
